About Study Course
Objective
To acquire knowledge about female sexual and reproductive health and factors influencing it.
Preliminary Knowledge
Basic understanding of female anatomy, physiology, most common diseases, health care organization, ethics.
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge
1.Sexual and reproductive life, factors affecting it. Sexual health indicators. Family planning – public education, methods, availability, selection criteria. Sexual and reproductive health of adolescents. Youth-friendly services. Situation in Latvia. Infectious effects on reproductive health. STD's, pelvic inflammatory disease. TORCH infections. Antenatal care of healthy pregnant woman. Common physiological changes and complaints of pregnant woman. Physical activity during pregnancy. Risk groups of pregnant women. Health problems and effects on pregnancy. Smoking, drug abuse during pregnancy. Getting ready of giving birth. Home birth – concerns, advantages. Common problems of obstetrics that are affecting public health (women knowledge and attitude towards the child's health, women knowledge of physiological childbirth and obstetrical analgesia options, premature labor, operative delivery, increase of caesarean operations, their impact on women's health, doctor-patient relations). Support of perinatal death. Advantages of breastfeeding. Public health strategic directions. Maternal and child health strategic directions: maternal and child health care, restriction of abortion and safe family planning methods, accessibility, education of youth on sexual and reproductive health issues, genital infections / HIV prevention, infertility treatment services. Violence against women.
Skills
1.To identify public health care system problems in reproductive health medicine related to women's health: maternal and newborn health care, decreasing of unsafe abortion and availability of safe family planning methods, education of society on topics related to sexual and reproductive health, decreasing the incidence of HIV and other reproductive tract infections. Maintaining quality of life of women during postmenopause period

1.To give public health advice on prevention of female sexual and reproductive heath problems.

Study Course Theme Plan

Sexual and reproductive health, evaluation and policy making. Women's health and its determinants lifelong. Possible topics of student research work.

Family planning – public education, methods, availability, selection criteria. Infertility – effects on female and public health. Legislation, principles of ethics.

Abortion. Indications of medical abortion, methods, legislation and organisation in Latvia, principles of ethics. Discussion in society about abortion.

A healthy newborn. Newborn care after delivery, the role of breastfeeding in the child's development and health. A sick newborn from the point of view from family and public health. The fetal origin of adult diseases.

Sexual and reproductive health of adolescents. Youth-friendly services. Situation in Latvia.

Maintaining the quality of life in old age. Sexual health and ageing.

Risk groups of gynaecological and oncological patients, screening, followup, primary and secondary prevention.

Student research paper presentation and discussion.

The period before pregnancy. Antenatal care of pregnant women, risk groups of pregnant women, the influence of harmful factors and outcome of pregnancy (smoking, alcohol and drug use, the influence of teratogenic factors), the most common disease during pregnancy effect and the outcome of pregnancy (urinary tract infection, gestational diabetes, genital infections, iron deficiency anaemia, hypertension, etc.). Education of the pregnant woman during pregnancy, and family preparation.

The main policymakers of women's health, sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in Latvia. The role of non-governmental organizations and public health professionals in promoting SRH. Ways to improve women's health, ensure access to evidence-based information and health services.

SRH research in Latvia and in the world. Strategic directions of public health care: strategic directions of women's and newborn health care: maternal and child health care, restriction of abortions and availability of family planning methods, education of young people on SRH issues, prevention of reproductive tract infections / HIV, infertility treatment services availability. Violence against women.
