About Study Course

Objective

To provide the acquirement and the mastering of theoretical knowledge and practical skills according to the regulation requirements of the Family Physician speciality, to train a specialist who is able to ensure consistent, continuous and comprehensive care of the patient and his/her family members and to help the patient to make a choice between services offered in health care, ensuring abilities of patients for better physical, mental and social action, a specialist is able to assess health condition of the patient, to diagnose illnesses and to treat according stated competences. To train a physician for the certification in a Family Physician speciality according the regulatory documents of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Knowledge and understanding characteristic for creative thinking or research and operation in interaction of various fields in an occupation of family physician. Understands aspects of treatment, rehabilitation and secondary prevention in medicine sub-sectors and nosologies with diagnostics (including laboratory, morphology, instrumental, non-instrumental and beam diagnostics), differential diagnosis, medical (clinical pharmacology, pharmacotherapy) and non-medical (diet therapy, physiotherapy). Is able to make decisions independently, solve complicated situations related to health care, diagnostics and treatment

Skills

1.• assessment of clinical and biochemical laboratory examination data, • ECG record, assessment (rhythm disturbance, leading disturbance, features of acute ischaemia, congestions), assessment of ECHO, veloergometry, • to set indications for invasive tactics, emergency and scheduled (coronarography, percutaneous coronary intervention). • usage of treating algorithms for acute conditions. • to manage mastering of one's competences and specialization independently • to undertake the responsibility for personnel group work results and related analysis • to perform work, research or further education in complicated and unpredictable conditions and change them by using new approaches if necessary. During post-graduate education a family physician must acquire indications and contraindications of application for the following additional methods in diagnostics of respiratory diseases: • assessment of core indicators of outer respiratory functions, • assessment of functional assay (bronchial permeability) • bronchoscopy, • CT, • blood gas analysis, • pulmonary X-ray (one must be able to assess results), • technique of aerosols inhalation, • picflowmetry.

Competences

1.Competences acquired allow to fortify decisions, to make additional analysis if necessary: - Is able to explain the impact of environmental changes on spread of a disease on the population, to understand the usage of preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic methods in this aspect. - Is able to evaluate patient's complaints, their relation to patient's health condition. Has got a wide understanding on diseases and their risk factors, on widespread diseases among the population, care of chronic diseases, on diseases which causes disability, on conditions which require emergency help. - Has got an understanding on usage of preventive and diagnostic manipulations in primary health care which includes nearly all specialities (i.e. paediatrics, gynaecology, surgery, ear, nose and throat diseases, dermato-venereology, ophthalmology, psychiatry, cardiology). - Ability to ensure treatment for the patient at the level of primary care, organize rehabilitation if necessary. - Understanding on diagnostic opportunities in primary and secondary health care level, on opportunities to send the patient to physician specialist if necessary. - Ability to organize and lead consultations in issues of health care organization, especially in issues related to health care of a mother and a child, family planning. - Understanding on issues of public health. - Ability to understand significance of positive physician-patient relationships, to teach patients to understand their complaints, learn to coexist along with those. - Ability to work in a team with other members of the primary health care team and other specialists. Is able to integrate knowledge in various fields: - An understanding on issues of health care organization on the whole and in particular of the primary health care organization. - Knowledge on legislation and directives in the health care, an ability to participate in developing them.
