About Study Course

Objective

To acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the etiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of pulp and apical periodontal tissue diseases.

Preliminary Knowledge

Oral anatomy, oral histology, dental embryology, pulp histology, physiology, oral microbiology, immunology, radiology, dental hard tissue pathology.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.After obtaining of the content of the study course students will have a detailed knowledge of the prevention, etiology, pathology, clinical presentation and treatment options for diseases affecting the pulp and periradicular tissue. Will be able to perform the diagnosis of endodontic pathology. Will have the knowledge of the differential diagnosis of oro-facial pain. Will understand the microbiology and immunology of pulpal and periapical disease, relation to the general health. Will understand biomaterials science and medicaments in relation to endodontics. Will have knowledge of the indications for apical surgery and complicated root canal treatment and for referral to an endodontic specialist. Will be able to evaluate the outcome and prognosis of the root canal treatment.

Skills

1.The undergraduate will be able to use and to interpret basic diagnostic tests. Will be able to use rubber dam and additional isolation methods. Will be able to use rubber dam and additional isolation methods. Will be able to provide good dental anesthesia and supplemental anesthesia methods. Undergraduate will be able to perform primary root canal treatment in satisfactory quality on non-complicated teeth and to provide first aid in the case of symptomatic endodontic pathology.

Competences

1.Students acquire competence in endodontics according to the regulations of the general dentist specialty. Competence to diagnose endodontic disease, make decisions and choose treatment methods that are in accordance with existing treatment methods in dentistry.

Test

Students should independently acquire the theoretical part of the study course by reading the mandatory literature indicated in accordance with each topic and the presentations indicated. Learning the specified literature is a mandatory part of the course.

As part of the course, it is mandatory for students to perform permanent practical work in the preclinical simulation room. This work involves a systematic workout for the endodontic approach of different dental groups, learning and practicing the development of approach delays for front teeth, canines, premolars and molars. The tasks are performed using phantom heads and simulating real clinical situations that help students develop manual skills, spatial thinking and understanding of root canal system morphology. This training forms a crucial foundation before switching to clinical work with patients.

Course Part 1: Evaluation of Student-Created Access Cavities According to Basic Principles of Cavity Formation and Cavity Quality Criteria: Evaluation of root canal localization according to basic principles of root canal localization. Assessment of appropriate instrument selection for root canal preparation. Evaluation of root canal preparation techniques. Evaluation of root canal filling techniques. Evaluation of individual stages in the process of tooth preparation and filling. Theoretical assessments after mastering the topic. Practical skill assessment (practical test): practical application of knowledge and acquired manual skills will be tested in a preclinical training base. Theoretical examination at the end of Part 1 (written). Practical part: Evaluation will include appropriate bur selection, conformity of access cavity shape, instrument selection for root canal preparation, preparation technique, preparation quality, tooth preparation for filling, filling instrument selection, appropriate filling material selection, and filling quality. General theoretical knowledge assessment - written. Course Part 2: Student’s theoretical knowledge assessment after mastering the topic - written test. Oral examination of theoretical knowledge before performing manipulations on a patient. Clinical work evaluation: conformity in performing diagnostics, diagnosis determination, appropriate selection of isolation, correctness of manipulation sequence, bur selection, conformity in access cavity formation, appropriateness of root canal treatment instrument selection, determination of working length, root canal preparation, selection of irrigating medication, irrigation technique, choice of inter-appointment medication, inter-appointment medication placement instruments and technique, filling instruments and materials selection, filling technique, filling completion, tooth sealing, radiological examinations during endodontic treatment. If all theoretical examinations during the course (both Part 1 and Part 2) are passed on the first attempt, a grade of 8 or higher is obtained in the final examination, and at least 80% is achieved in practical evaluation and the practical test - the student receives an automatic pass in the exam with a grade of 8 or higher - according to the obtained grades. Written tests, assessment of practical manipulation skills (practical test), investigation of problem situations, theoretical test at the end of the course (written).
