About Study Course

Objective

Acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills in a simulated environment to prepare physicians for decision-making and practical action in clinical practice in accordance with the regulations of the pediatric specialty.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.During the study course, the resident acquires and strengthens knowledge that will allow him/her to understand and theoretically describe the indication and execution of practical manipulations, cardiopulmonary resuscitation principles for children and adults, etiology of septic shock, pathogenesis, diagnostics, and treatment principles, basics of mechanical ventilation.

Skills

1.The resident will have acquired the following skills in a simulated environment: • Abdominal paracentesis • External chest compression in children • Collection of blood from central lines in children • Bag, valve and mask ventilation in children • Administer intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular & intravenous drugs in children • Insertion of intraosseous needle in children • Capillary or peripheral blood samplings in children • Lumbar puncture in children • Umbilical venous and artery cannulation and sampling • Needle thoracocentesis for pleural effusion or pneumothorax in children • Tracheal intubation of children • Urethral catheterisation in children • Venous puncture and catheter insertion in children

Competences

1.The following competencies are necessary, but not exhaustive (the range of competencies can be expanded if preconditions develop during studies), and they should be acquired in connection with the completion of relevant simulations: • Provide immediate care for children in emergency situations, including first aid and resuscitation; • Assess and evaluate an acute pediatric emergency • Provide basic first aid • Provide acute pediatric care in an emergency • Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation in neonatal and pediatric patients • Provide basic information and communicate with colleagues and parents in the following simulated situations: Basic and advanced CPR in children - Cardiac arrest, asystole / PEA - cardiac arrest, VF / pulseless VT - Stable tachyarrhythmia - Unstable tachyarrhythmia (electrical injury) - Bradycardia (drowning / hypothermia); Respiratory failure: - Pneumonia - Upper airway obstruction - Lower airway obstruction (asthma, bronchiolitis); - Foreign body in the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract; Circulatory failure: - Hypovolemic shock - Septic shock - Cardiogenic shock - Obstructive shock - Anaphylactic shock - Distributive shock (MIS-C); Neurological emergencies - Status epilepticus - Head injury - Altered state of consciousness (drug overdose) - Irritated patient in an emergency department; Metabolic disorders: - Electrolyte imbalances (Hyperkalemia, Hypokalemia, Hypernatremia, Hyponatremia) - DKA - Hypoglycemia; Trauma: - Polytrauma - Violence; Communication: - Communication with parents in complicated situations (oncology, refusal of treatment, etc.) - Patient safety case reporting.

Assessment

Individual work

-
-
During the study course, the resident must acquire theoretical knowledge about the manipulations (performed in the simulation course) and the emergencies mentioned in the simulation scenarios, paying attention to the tasks of a practicing pediatric infectologist in the care of such children.

Examination

Grade
1.

Examination

-
-
In the planned seminars of the course, resident competencies will be assessed trough performing simulation scenarios.
2.

Examination

-
-
At the end of the course the lecturer gives an assessment of the practical skills and theoretical knowledge in the 10-point grading scale by entering the grade in the student’s gradebook
