About Study Course

Objective

At the end of the course the students will have gained knowledge of diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory diseases and injuries in maxillofacial region.

Preliminary Knowledge

To start study course (or semester) all previous assessments according to Study plan (D1) should be successfully passed. Anatomy, pathophysiology, general and special pathology, general surgery, diagnostic radiology, internal diseases with propaedeutics, pharmacology, topographic anatomy of oral and maxillofacial region, oral surgery, emergency care.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.As a result of the study course, the student will be able to present basic knowledge about the types of inflammatory diseases and injuries of the oral and maxillofacial region, the mechanisms of their occurrence, principles of diagnosis and treatment.

Skills

1.Strengthened local and general examination skills of patients (palpation, auscultation). As a result of the study course, students will be able to collect a targeted anamnesis and clinically examine a patient with inflammation and trauma of the oral and maxillofacial region, make a temporary diagnosis, send for X-ray and other additional examinations, interpret X-ray and laboratory examinations, determine treatment location. In case of injuries, provide emergency care and impose temporary immobilization, refer the patient for specialized treatment to an appropriate institution. Will be able to make intraoral incisions and prescribe medical therapy.

Competences

1.Will be competent to use acquired knowledge about injuries and inflammatory processes in the oral and maxillofacial region, to formulate diagnoses and differentiate from other diseases. Able to analyze examination data and evaluate the patient's treatment options in general dental practice, to provide treatment as needed. Demonstrates the principle of emergency care, performs temporary immobilization, prescribe medical therapy. Able to assess the need and refer the patient for further treatment to a specialist.. The students will recognize the necessity for lifelong learning.

Examination

During the practical classes, the teacher observes and evaluates the student's communication skills and attitude towards patients, teachers, group members and other medical staff. A short discussion on the topic precedes each lesson. The teacher asks questions about the theory, expecting oral answers. Active participation in practical classes: examination and evaluation of patients, observation and assistance of surgical operations. The clinical work performed by the student in the practical classes must be regularly reflected in the "Student's Diary in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery", and a signature must be received from the teacher in time. Each student writes a patient's medical history, which is presented in the relevant seminar. At the study course student’s performance is evaluated in a cumulative assessment.

The total final grade is formed from the fulfillment of the following criteria with an appropriate proportion:

  • Attendance — 10%
  • Communication with staff, peers, and patients — 10%
  • Performance in classes and seminars — 80%

Tests and seminars are graded on a 10-point scale. Points earned during the semester are summed, and the average score is included in the cumulative grade.

Attendance

  • 0 absences — 10 points
  • 1 absence — 5 points
  • 2 absences — 0 points; continuation of studies requires the dean’s approval

In accordance with Study Regulations I (01.07.2025), Section 2.17, in cases of excused absence approved by the dean or vice-dean, students may be awarded bonus points (up to 10). This applies when representing the university, for example, at institutional or national events, scientific conferences, exchange programs, cultural activities, or national/international sports competitions.

The examination "Oral and maxillofacial surgery", the examination takes place after the 9th semester
