About Study Course

Objective

To provide theoretical knowledge and acquisition of practical skills in the therapeutic gastroenterology specialty in accordance with the Terms of Reference enabling the physician to prepare for gastroenterology specialty certification.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Digestive tract, including the hepatobiliary system and pancreas, disease aetiology, pathogenesis, development, clinic, examination and treatment. This knowledge includes histopathology, radiology, haematology, microbiology and parasitology, clinical pathology, immunology, pharmacology, genetics, molecular biology, epidemiology and statistics, as well as understanding of medical demography and health economics.

Skills

1.1. To be able to perform standard abdominal ultrasound investigation with result interpretation; 2. To interpret functional tests (24/48-hour oesophageal pH-metry, oesophageal manometry). 3. To apply and interpret the occult faecal blood tests results. 4. To evaluate visually body secretions (faeces, vomit). 5. To perform oral or transnasal long tube placement, including Sengstaken-Blakemore tube placement for bleeding oesophageal varices haemostasis. 6. To translate practically the knowledge regarding the liver puncture biopsies, to be able to execute said procedure. 7. To know and be able to apply knowledge of paracentesis in practice.

Competences

1.Ability to work as a specialist gastroenterologist in the gastroenterology department, as well as independently carry out consultations in hospitals and outpatient clinics.

To get acquainted with digestive tract diseases, their diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment, prevention and acquire the practical work experience in multifunctional Clinical Hospital setting using appropriate modern diagnostic and therapeutic facilities, to work with outpatient and hospital patient contingent including consultations in another profile departments, research facilities, training and scientific literature and international contacts, to enable the physician to develop inherent personal qualities needed for the gastroenterology specialty, to acquire theoretical knowledge and basic practical skills in the abdominal ultrasonography. For each seminar, prepare 7-12 slides on the topic of the seminar - for presentation and discussion. During the course, prepare 3 clinical tasks in the form of 10-15 slides. Describe 1 clinical case (case report) at least at the level of national publications.
