About Study Course

Objective

To acquire skills and knowledge on correct reading, writing, use and explanation of anatomical and clinical terms, to integrate the knowledge of Latin in studying other study courses and in doing scientific work to help them understand the main idea of scientific articles, using the knowledge in medical terminology.

Preliminary Knowledge

Knowledge of the English alphabet.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.On successful completion of the course the students will know how to: • explain the basic rules in reading and writing medical terms; • identify the Latin and Greek prefixes and word endings for new word formation; • name the Latin combining forms and their meanings; • interpret the rules for making, explaining and using anatomical and clinical terms.

Skills

1.On successful completion of the course the students will be able to: • read and write the medical terms correctly; • identify medical combining forms; • identify and classify anatomical and clinical terms; • form and explain anatomical and clinical terms; • translate the terms from English into Latin and vice versa.

Competences

1.On successful completion of the course the students will be able to use properly the anatomical and clinical terms in academic situations.

Learning vocabulary forms of the nouns and adjectives; acquiring medical combining forms; fulfilling regular home assignments on the themes taken; checking performed exercises and doing similar tasks in the practical classes; work with the dictionaries, additional materials and the internet to get the deeper understanging of the medical terms.

1. Regular attendance ; active participation in practical classes; properly done home assignments and independent work (compulsory exercises in e-studies), submitted in due time and containing 5 % of total grade. 2. Two online tests successfully passed (at least 55% of correct answers in each test). The first test is written in the last practical class No 8 of the first semester, the second one after completing the course. The tests assess the skills to a) write a word in its vocabulary form, b) make agreement of the adjective with the noun, c) translate terms, d) explain and form clinical terms.
