About Study Course

Objective

To ensure the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the examination of newborn children of different gestational ages, diagnosis of pathologies, recognition of critical situations and appropriate treatment, synthesising the clinical picture with the results of laboratory, visual and invasive examinations in the diagnostic process. To prepare the specialist doctor for the recognition and treatment of an acute and urgent condition, choosing and applying various technical options according to the patient’s condition and diagnosis – non-invasive ventilation, artificial lung ventilation, high-frequency ventilation, inhaled NO, therapeutic hypothermia, as well as learning to control the condition of these patients using monitoring options of various systems – monitoring of vital functions, aEEG, NIRS. To become skilful in resuscitation and stabilisation of a newborn in the delivery room, as well as in the subsequent newborn period. To form an understanding of the different physiology of newborns with extremely low birth weight and the specifics of care that must be followed to ensure the quality of life of these patients and the dynamic monitoring of these patients in the first years of life, controlling and timely correcting any metabolic and developmental deficits. To learn practical skills – umbilical vein and artery catheterisation, arterial puncture, intubation in newborns, including children with extremely low birth weight, connection to lung ventilation machines, lumbar puncture, puncture of the Ommaya reservoir. To teach ECHO, NSG as part of screening. To acquire the ability to work in a team, individually, involving specialists as necessary.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.As a result of studies in the specialty of neonatology, one acquires knowledge on the theory of physiology and pathology of the foetus and newborn child, as well as diagnostic, treatment and care measures.

Skills

1.As a result of studies, one is able to assess the state of health of a newborn child, risk factors and potential pathologies, diagnose pathologies, perform examinations and provide treatment, care, analyse the results of treatment and care.

Competences

1.The level of theoretical and practical knowledge will allow to take the neonatologist certification exam to obtain a neonatologist certificate, with further opportunities to practice as a specialist in neonatology, to carry out scientific research work in neonatology in accordance with the regulatory documents of the Republic of Latvia, to continue studies at the doctoral level.
