About Study Course

Objective

To acquaint students with the following: 1) the main functions of music as non-verbal acoustic communication: music as a factor of identity, its functioning in transition rituals and its use in advertising. 2) types and functions of silence, its diversity in different cultures.

Preliminary Knowledge

The course does not require any special musical preparation, such as reading and playing music etc.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Understanding of music and what it is like in modern science (music as a second acoustic communication alongside the spoken language) and the resulting view of the nature and functioning of music. The form of musical communication derives from the occasional function performed by music, so special attention is paid to the branched functional attachments of different types of music. Music is often a deciding factor in advertising. Techniques for using music in advertising, how music symbolism works in advertising, etc. is one of the important groups of topics of the course. The importance of silence as a form of communication is often underestimated, and the diversity of its forms and uses is often overlooked. Classes are devoted to the types of silence, its functions, and the diversity of silence in different cultures.

Skills

1.To consider analytically and critically the types, uses and functions of non-verbal acoustic communication, to be able to apply conceptual schemes in practice.

Competences

1.On the thematic framework of verbal and non-verbal communication.
