About Study Course

Objective

To ensure acquisition and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in pulmonology according to the requirements of the thoracic surgery speciality regulations to prepare doctors for certification in the speciality of thoracic surgery according to regulatory documents of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Able to demonstrate in-depth or extended knowledge and understanding of the following topics: pathophysiology of the lung, pleura, bronchial system, diagnostic pulmonology methods, instrumentation used, physician’s tactics in acute cases, emergency care in cases of necessity.

Skills

1.Able to independently apply theory, methods and problem-solving skills to perform the functions of a highly skilled thoracic surgeon: Assess the patient’s general condition correctly. Examine the patient adequately. Provide emergency assistance when needed.

Competences

1.Able to independently formulate and critically analyse complicated scientific and professional problems, to substantiate decisions, and to conduct additional analysis, if needed. Able to integrate knowledge from different fields, make a contribution to the creation of new knowledge, development of research or professional activity methods, to demonstrate understanding and ethical responsibility for the potential impact of scientific results or professional activity.

A resident can get a passing grade if they can: Assess the patient’s general condition correctly. Examine the patient adequately. Provide emergency assistance when needed. Final Examination: A. Type of examination - at the end of the cycle, the resident’s theoretical knowledge is tested in a written test (50 questions) and orally, assessed on a 10-point scale. B. Checking the performance of different manipulations on a training dummy. Assessment on a 10-point scale.
