About Study Course

Objective

To ensure acquisition and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in thoracic surgery according to the requirements of the thoracic surgery speciality regulations to prepare doctors for certification in the speciality of thoracic surgery according to regulatory documents of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.To be able to demonstrate in-depth or extended knowledge and understanding, part of which are in line with the latest discoveries in the respective field of science or professional area and lay the foundation for creative thinking or research, including when working in-between different sectors - theoretical foundations of thoracic surgery: - anatomy, pathophysiology of the lungs, pleura, bronchial system, oesophagus and chest wall, - diagnostic methods, instrumentation used in thoracic surgery, - surgical tactics in acute cases, - emergency care in cases of necessity, indications for operative treatment, - specific features of post-operative management.

Skills

1.Able to apply theory, methods and problem-solving skills independently to perform highly skilled professional functions - To accurately assess the general condition of the patient. - To examine the patient adequately. - Be able to puncture the pleural space. - Be able to drain the pleural cavity.

Competences

1.Able to independently formulate and critically analyse complicated scientific and professional problems, to substantiate decisions, and to conduct additional analysis, if needed. Able to integrate knowledge from different fields, make a contribution to the creation of new knowledge, development of research or professional activity methods, to demonstrate understanding and ethical responsibility for the scientific result or potential impact of professional activity.

To be successfully assessed, a medical student must be able to: • provide emergency surgical treatment in acute cases of patients with thoracic pathology, • establish a proper diagnostic scheme and treatment tactics for patients with thoracic pathology, • study possible postoperative complications, their prevention and treatment, to use practical skills in diagnosis and medical manipulation.
