About Study Course

Objective

To create an opportunity to acquire basic knowledge of the main basic principles of psychological counselling and their specific character regarding different groups of clients, to develop counselling skills with clients/patients using various interventions/methods.

Preliminary Knowledge

General Psychology, Professional Ethics, Developmental Psychology, Basic Psychological Research, Clinical Psychology, Personality Psychology.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Students describe the differences of psychological counselling and psychotherapy, describe the principles for creating counselling relationship with clients and compare their peculiarities with different client/patient groups, describe and explain the stages of the individual counselling process, identify counselling interventions, and describe the counselling environment.

Skills

1.Students reflect on their skills and experience, are able to provide feedback to their peers about their skills. Express empathic attitude towards the client (student). Able to direct their further learning independently and able to work with their fellow students to achieve a common goal.

Competences

1.Students use counselling micro-skills according to the context of the situation, are able to establish counselling relationships with the client; conclude an agreement. Recognise used counselling skills in their own and others' work.

Revision of lecture material independently, reading sources and preparing for seminars and the examination. Practising own counselling skills in a group of three and submit descriptions and analysis of the counselling sessions. Prepare a report and a presentation on the specific character of psychological counselling for a particular group of clients.

1. Active participation in lectures, classes and seminars, asking questions and making reference to the read sources –10% 2. Work in a group of 3: a client, a counsellor and an observer. In each role, perform specific tasks and answer each question regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the counsellor’s work, and the client's difficulties and resources. Self-reflection on the work in a group of 3 – 30% 3. A report on the specific nature of counselling for a particular client/patient group – 30% 4. Examination – a case study – 30%
