About Study Course

Objective

To introduce the medical resident to the possibilities for diagnosis and treatment of polytrauma in invasive radiology.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.As a result of completing the study course, medical residents will be familiar with the indications and contraindications of vascular trauma treatment (embolisation, stenting), complications, the basic principles of choosing embolisation agents, the role of stents in the treatment of vascular traumatic injuries, in relation to blunt traumatic injuries of the liver, spleen and kidneys, complications of splenectomy. Medical residents will know the importance of diagnostic laparotomy and non-surgical treatment for patients with traumatic liver damage, will understand the importance of the grading system of the severity of traumatic damage to organs. Pelvic trauma: • Residents will know the limitations of diagnostic laparotomy in the diagnosis of pelvic haemorrhage. • Will understand the more commonly affected blood vessels in case of specific pelvic bone fractures. • Will understand the role of diagnostic arteriography and arterial embolisation in hemodynamically stable and unstable patients. • Will select the optimal time for arteriography in patients with multiple pelvic bone fractures potentially requiring diagnostic laparotomy or external fixation. • Will know different strategies for the treatment of pelvic bleeding, possible complications of embolisation. Limb trauma: • Will be familiar with the clinical and radiological picture of limb artery injury (angiography, CTA, dopplerography, MRA), as well as know the collateral arteries, their importance after embolisation of the injured artery. Face and neck trauma: • Indications and contraindications for transcatheter embolisation in case of facial and neck vascular trauma. • To identify collaterals between intra- and extracranial circulation, evaluate the possibilities of embolisation.

Skills

1.During the course, medical residents will learn to insert aortic occlusion balloons in patients with pronounced haemorrhage without the help of imaging, will be able to perform selective catheterisation of blood vessels, incl. using microcatheters, guidewires, place stents, stent prosthesis in patients with vascular trauma, perform treatment of endovascular complications, choose the most suitable embolisation agent.

Competences

1.After completing the course, residents will be able to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the treatment of vascular trauma, will be aware of possible complications, will be able to diagnose and treat them.

Assessment of medical residents’ knowledge includes current knowledge testing – seminars and practical training (30%), patient analysis (20%), multiple-choice tests and clinical situation tasks (50%). Testing of acquired knowledge with a differentiated assessment on a 10-point scale.
