About Study Course

Objective

To develop the communicative skills and skills of using medical terminology in English for academic and vocational purposes and to promote the learning of medical terminology in English and its practical use.

Preliminary Knowledge

Secondary school English level.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to: • describe the parts and organs of the body and their functions; • name and explain diseases, their symptoms and prophylaxis; • describe health related problems and give advice on their prevention; • describe the healthy life style principles; • explain the influence of healthy life style on the human organism.

Skills

1.On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to: • read and understand the main ideas in the popular scientific texts and articles; • write summaries of research articles; • apply appropriate vocabulary in communication with medical workers; • write and explain medical terms; • give a presentation in the classroom;express their opinions and discuss the main health related problems.

Competences

1.As a result of successful study, students will be able to use the acquired medical terminology in English in new situations in relation to knowledge and skills acquired during other courses.

1) independent performance of work assignments in the e-study environment of the course or in the format specified by the lecturer;

2) preparation and presentation of presentations on selected topics within the scope of the course topic using different sources of information: books, articles, databases, Internet resources, etc.

1) Regular attendance and active participation in practical classes, timely submitted, quality completed written homework;

2) final control works of the topic - examination of the knowledge and practical use of the acquired terminology;

3) reports/presentations that meet uniform criteria. In the presentation, the student displays his or her oral skills and understanding in English: prepared monologue (information gathering, presentation of opinion), dialogue (questions answered, questions asked);

4) at the end of the course an examination consisting of writing a summary of the research Article/presentation;

5) The final assessment of the course is cumulative and consists of the results of the study work - independent work, quiz work - 57%, the result of the presentation - 28% and the result of the writing task - 15%.
