About Study Course

Objective

Provide the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills and their improvement in accordance with the specialty Regulation in Paediatric Infectious Diseases, adopted in Latvia, and the requirements of the European Union regarding this specialty, which would allow the doctors to understand the immune system, know the distinction between allergic reactions and autoimmunity mechanisms, recognize states of immunodeficiency by reading literature or in their clinical practice, as well as allow to provide professional tertiary healthcare level help to the patient, their family and colleagues.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.During the rotation period the resident acquires knowledge and competence of the characteristic immune system of children of different ages, hereditary and acquired immunodeficiency conditions, diagnosis, progress and treatment peculiarities of the HIV infection in children and, as a result, is able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of the mentioned field in order to be able to apply it in pediatrics.

Skills

1.During the rotation period the resident will be able to perform objective examination of the child’s clinical state and its evaluation in accordance with the age, to recognise the child with immunodeficiency condition, prescribe and evaluate the methods for examination of the immunological status, will be able to independently collect clinical material for the determination of the etiological factors of the infectious diseases.

Competences

1.• examine and assess characteristic clinical symptoms of infectious diseases and syndromes in children of different ages; • create a patient’s individual diagnostic and treatment algorithm; • appropriately collect material for laboratory diagnostics of infectious diseases and evaluate the obtained results, taking into consideration the nature of the method and the age of the child; • choose the specific diagnostic methods, evaluate the level of their information and application time; • plan infection control measures; • vaccinate and perform dermal testing.
