About Study Course

Objective

Upon completion of the course the students will have acquired the basic knowledge of pain, discomfort and psychological stress elimination, basic knowledge of the most common oral surgical procedures – exodontics and preprosthetic surgery in general dentistry practice. To acquire and practically apply in the clinic the skills of local anesthesia and simple and complicated exodontics, and performing small surgical manipulations in the dentoalveolar region, acquire and practically apply administration of medications subcutaneously, intramuscularly and intravenously, make profilaksis and management for possible complications. Abtaine competence to communicate and clinically investigate patient and to make diagnosis of pathology in clinical setting, to abtaine competence to make dentoalveolar surgery with pain management according to dentoalveolar procedure and patient's general health status.

Preliminary Knowledge

To begin the study course (or semester), all previous assessments outlined in the Study Plan (D1) must be successfully completed. Human anatomy, normal and pathological physiology, histology, biomaterials in dentistry, radiology and roentgenology, internal diseases with basic propaedeutic, emergency care, and pharmacology.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Describe patient's mouth and tooth examination methods, some of which are based on latest discoveries and technologies. Students will describe justified oro-facial pain control methods for patients of all ages and proper selection of these methods depending on the patient, basic diagnostic and treatment manipulations in oral surgery, such as simple and complicated exodontics and preprosthetic procedures and they will explain the use of medications in treatment.

Skills

1.Students will have acquired the basic knowledge of the most common oral surgical procedures in general dentistry practice. Students will abtaine competence to communicate and clinically investigate patient, do visual examination and examination by palpation and percussion methods. Students will be able to choose and apply surface, plexar and regional anaesthesia, explain the possible causes of failures and complications and perform patients’ monitoring. Students will be able to choose the most appropriate exodontic method and to perform simple exodontics with the erupted tooth explaining the steps, prevention and management for possible complications

Competences

1.Students will abtaine competence to communicate and clinically investigate patient and diagnose pathology, demonstrate pain, anxiety elimination methods for practical work in general dentistry, will be able to demonstrate and apply the knowledge and skills of oral surgery for exodontic and preprosthetic procedures in general dentistry practice, prevention and management for possible complications.

Individual work

-
-
Individual acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in compliance with the topic of each practical class, independent study of the given literature. Please fill in the course evaluation form at the end of the course.

Examination

Examination

-
10 points

During the practical classes, the lecturer observes students' communication skills and attitude towards patients, lecturers, group members, and other medical staff. Before each class, there is a short discussion about the current topic. The lecturer asks questions about the theory, expecting oral answers. Students answer control questions in writing or electronically. During the course, students fill in all manipulations in the “Student Diary in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery” including i/m, i/v, s/c injection techniques and signature from the MITC lecturer.

Final Examination

At the end of the course, students are required to take an examination consisting of two theoretical questions and the following tasks:

  1. Identify the types of local anesthesia used for tooth or root extraction (by random selection).
  2. Select appropriate instruments for extraction (by random selection) and respond to additional questions concerning the instruments.
  3. Analyze a radiograph (by random selection): specify the type of image, describe the pathology, and indicate a possible diagnosis.
  4. Practical work completed in clinical classes is also evaluated. This work must be documented and verified with the instructor’s signature in the Student Logbook in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The instructor may also ask questions regarding clinical cases completed in previous semesters.

Final semester and course grade

The cumulative grade is calculated according to the following criteria:

5th Semester

Attendance — 10%

Communication with staff, peers, and patients — 10%

Performance in classes and seminars — 80%

6th Semester

Attendance — 10%

Communication with staff, peers, and patients — 10%

Performance in classes and seminars — 30%

Final examination — 50%

Midterm Tests and Seminars

Midterm tests and seminars are graded on a 10-point scale. Points earned throughout the semester are summed, and an average grade is calculated, which contributes to the cumulative assessment.

Attendance

0 absences — 10 points

1 absence — 5 points

2 absences — 0 points; continuation of studies requires the dean’s approval

Following Study Regulations I (01.07.2025), Section 2.17, in cases of excused absence approved by the dean or vice-dean, students may be awarded bonus points (up to 10). This provision applies when a student represents the university, for example, at institutional or national events, scientific conferences, exchange programs, cultural activities, or national/international sports competitions.
