About Study Course

Objective

To acquaint students with civil and environmental protection systems and legal regulation thereof in the world, in the EU and Latvia, hazardous chemicals and other hazards, risk identification and control, actions, incl. communication in the event of a disaster, legal regimes. To provide students with knowledge of environmental hazards and environmental impact on people. To acquaint students with topical legal problems in solving environmental protection issues and with the basics of disaster medicine and communication in crisis situations. To provide students with knowledge of typical cases of trauma and accident management, and first aid skills.

Preliminary Knowledge

Knowledge in the field of law acquired in the Bachelor’s study programme Law.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.After completing the study course, students are able to interpret the topics covered by the study course.

Skills

1.After completing the study course, students apply their knowledge in the face of disaster situations and dangers for the environment. Students demonstrates general knowledge of civil disaster management and cooperation between the institutions involved and practical skills in the process of resuscitation.

Competences

1.After completing the study course, students understand the institutional regulation and operation of the civil defence and environmental protection system at international and national level. Students understand the factors affecting the environment and safety, assess conditions, and respond to emergencies.

A report – 9 pages, according to RSU regulations for writing and formatting a research paper. Topic – assessment of the civil defence system, application of liability for violations in the field of civil defence. Preparation and making of presentations. The course will require independent use of Internet resources. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal.

Requirements for earning credit points: 1) Attendance of lectures and practical classes. 2) Positive assessment for the report. 3) Positive assessment for the exam. Learning outcomes will be assessed through the following forms of assessment: 1. Participation in lectures, seminars, preparation and making of presentations. 2. Persons not participating in the lecture Environmental Protection will have to write a report on the subject. 3. Practical classes on first aid are compulsory. 4. The final assessment is granted applying a 10-point scale based on the learning outcomes about the subject.
