About Study Course

Objective

To provide medical residents with opportunities to acquire and improve theoretical knowledge and skills in the specific health care field of psychiatry in order to prepare them for successfully passing the certification examination in the specialty of a doctor of physical and rehabilitation medicine, in accordance with laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Will demonstrate the acquired knowledge: • will be able to explain the diagnostic principles specific to the field of psychiatry; • will be able to name and describe various sleep disorders; • will be able to classify and define indicators of cognitive function; • will be able to name and describe the signs of acute psychoses.

Skills

1.The medical resident will be able to: • assess patients’ cognitive function, including behavioural, using appropriate methods; • use different concepts and terms about patients’ sleep disorders; • diagnose early depression in patients.

Competences

1.The medical resident will use the acquired knowledge and skills: • to interpret the data obtained in the assessment of cognitive function; • to evaluate and analyse the behavioural function corresponding to the age and state of health; • to justify the necessity of starting medication therapy for depressed patients.

The daily work of a resident doctor with psychiatric patients, in an inpatient setting under the supervision of a psychiatrist entitled to teach. Acquisition of theoretical knowledge and improvement of skills, according to the content of the study course.

100% attendance of theoretical seminars. Regular work with patients at the place of implementation of the study course under the guidance of a doctor entitled to teach. Presentation of a patient or clinical case at the end of the study course. Answering the questions prepared by the study course leader and teaching staff or passing tests in accordance with the Academic Regulations.
