About Study Course

Objective

Acquire and improve theoretical knowledge and practical skills in accordance with the requirements of the specialism with the aim of preparing paediatric dentists for certification in accordance with Latvian legislation. Ensure the acquisition of evidence-based knowledge in paediatric dental disease pathology, microbiology, endodontology, integrating the sphere of the specialism into other sectors of dentistry and medicine.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.In disease diagnostics, prevention, treatment planning, conservative and surgical treatment, prognosis assessment. Ensure the acquisition of the evidence-based knowledge in paediatric dental disease pathology, microbiology, endodontology, integrating the sphere of the specialism into other sectors of dentistry and medicine. Ensure the acquisition of knowledge in methodology and critical assessment of the literature.

Skills

1.Ensure the acquisition of skills in diagnostics and differential diagnostics of paediatric dental diseases. Apply evidence-based treatment methods to conservative, surgical and endodontic dental treatment. Ensure the acquisition of treatment planning skills that are integrated and related to other spheres of dentistry. Professional communication with patients, medical staff and colleagues. Ensure multidisciplinary care of traumatic dental injuries.

Competences

1.Ensure a high level of competence in paediatric dentistry in accordance with the Rules of the Paediatric Dentist sub-specialty for the acquisition of the corresponding professional qualification. Be competent to work in stomatological institutions in accordance with the profile of the acquired qualification, as determined by the Professional association; and in private practice in accordance with existing legislation; and in universities to train students and doctors.

Attend seminars. Work in the Paediatric department of the Institute of Dentistry; accept patients by appointment, medical duties, perform dental care and dental extractions under general anaesthesia (minimum 50patients). Attend common lectures intended for RSU postgraduates. Participate in student training. Prepare to sit the State examination and defend a postgraduate research project conducted during the process of study.

Successful completion of the study process 10%; State Examination assessing theoretical knowledge of postgraduates 20%; A scientific research project, clinical study or applied research project previously submitted to the Committee in a written form should be defended in the presence of the State Examination Committee 30%; Presentation of 10 clinical cases with laboratory testing, treatment plan and treatment outcomes (4 cases of trauma, 2 cases of cariology, 2 cases of congenital defects, 2 cases of anaesthesia) 40%.
