About Study Course

Objective

The aim of the course is to provide the postgraduate education based on a solid foundation of evidence-based practice and research. It has following objectives: To provide supervised theoretical and clinical training in different orthodontic treatment methods so that the specialists in Orthodontics will be able to: - diagnose and provide treatment for children, adolescents and adults with an orthodontic treatment need; formulate a treatment plan and predict its course, evaluate psychological aspects relevant to orthodontics - collaborate with other colleges in interdisciplinary treatments for dental and dento-skeletal problems like craniofacial anomalies or craniomandibular disorder, as well as obstructive sleep apnoea. To educate in research methodology and promote research activities that by accomplishing the program the students will be able comprehensively review, understand, and evaluate the literature relevant to orthodontics; formulate a research hypothesis, design a methodological study, conduct the research, and present the findings. To encourage development of pedagogical skills by involvement in teaching of undergraduate students and training auxiliary personnel. The Postgraduate Orthodontic Program follows and respects following legal documents: Medical law, regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers Nr. 685 and Nr. 268 and follows the recommendations given by the” Erasmus Committee” (European Journal of Orthodontics 2014, 36:340-9.)

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Knowledge about the materials used in orthodontics. Knowledge about the indices to assess the treatment need and to evaluate the treatment outcome. Knowledge about about the tissue reactions to the orthodontic forces. Knowledge about the temporomandibular joint and stomatognathic system: normal and abnormal mastication, and function, components of the craniomandibular system. Knowledge about the iatrogenic effects of the orthodontic treatment. Knowledge about the psychological aspects of orthodontic treatment, psychological differences of children and adolescents, psychosocial impact of dental and facial appearance, psychological aspects of orthognathic treatment. Knowledge about the orthodontic treatment in adults. Knowledge about orthodontic treatment particularities for children with orofacial clefts. Knowledge about the use of oral appliances for treatment of OSA. Knowledge about about the praxis management and safety.

Skills

1.Ability to perform interdisciplinary treatment in patient with general medical and dental problems, patients with congenital syndromes and craniofacial anomalies, including orthognathic surgery and craniomandiblar problems. Assess the orthodontic treatment need at the individual and society level. Will be able to perform specialised literature search, evaluate the evidence level of the study. Provide evidence based treatment. Be able to formulate the research hypothesis, perform the study design of a clinical study, obtain the data and present the research data. Independently plan and organise long life learning and professional development plan. Take the responsibility about the results of the professional performance. Will be able to continue professional development and research also under non motivating conditions.

Competences

1.Competent to elaborate the treatment and retention protocols based on the evidence based principles. Explain the treatment plan to the patient or the parents, including the consequences in the cases when the treatment is not performed. Competent to understand and apply the biomechanical principles during orthodontic treatment. Competent to assess the treatment progress and the treatment result. Competent to minimize the side effects of orthodontic treatment and to treat the consequences, if possible. Competent to treat patients with: removable, extra oral, segmented fixed and full fixed appliances, lingual anchorage devices, retention appliances, functional appliances, skeletal anchorage. Competent to participate in the interdisciplinary treatment for periodontally involved patients and patients requiring restorative works. Competent to participate in the interdisciplinary treatment. Competent to analyse a research article and make a design for a research project.
