About Study Course

Objective

To train rheumatology residents to understand the surgical treatment options for musculoskeletal and connective tissue diseases. To provide knowledge of the role and importance of surgical therapy in the management and rehabilitation of rheumatic diseases, as well as the indications and contraindications for its application.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.The resident demonstrates advanced and comprehensive knowledge of the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal and autoimmune connective tissue diseases, forming a foundation for clinical reasoning, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The resident: understands medical technologies and surgical methods used in traumatology and orthopedics, their principles, and applications in rheumatology; knows the indications and contraindications for surgical therapy in rheumatic diseases; recognizes the role of invasive procedures (e.g., synovial fluid aspiration, soft tissue and joint injections, synovial, muscle, skin, subcutaneous, and salivary gland biopsies) in diagnosis, differential diagnosis, disease activity, and treatment evaluation.

Skills

1.The resident: understands the clinical problem and selects appropriate diagnostic and treatment algorithms; performs diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive measures in rheumatic diseases; can discuss surgical management options in rheumatology with specialists and non-specialists; accurately maintains medical documentation in outpatient and inpatient settings; independently develops professional skills, assumes responsibility for results and their evaluation; performs or assists in invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures — synovial fluid aspiration, soft tissue and joint injections, and biopsies.

Competences

1.The resident: practices within their professional competence at a high level of knowledge and skill, performing diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of rheumatic diseases; makes evidence-based, scientifically justified decisions and documents them appropriately; evaluates the effectiveness and risks of invasive and surgical methods in each clinical situation; integrates traumatologic and orthopedic approaches in the treatment and functional restoration of rheumatic patients; collaborates within a multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive patient care.

Assessment

Individual work

-
-
To acquire basic surgical treatment principles and methods decreasing or preventing the progress of damage to the joint support system or rheumatic disease. The resident independently gets acquainted with the latest literature data, research results, and constantly prepares presentations for theoretical seminars. Independently learns to perform clinical practical examinations and manipulations.

Examination

Examination

-
-
Current knowledge examination – seminars and practical training during patient analysis, action algorithms, multichoice variants, and clinical situation tasks. Theoretical and practical knowledge in rotation discipline shall be assessed in a 10-point system by the head of the relevant rotation discipline, making an entry in the resident's book.
