About Study Course
Objective
The course is designed to prepare and introduce students into the study process and give insights into social sciences, their chosen field and the interaction between social sciences fields.
Preliminary Knowledge
Not necessary.
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge
1.After completion of the course, students understand the organisation of the study process, the E-study system, the requirements of the course and the principles of the academic environment.
2.Students are familiar with basic concepts and main directions of social sciences - systems of law, politics, business and communication.
3.Students understand the interplay and impact these systems have on society.
4.Students know the principles of information literacy (search, evaluation, use of information) and the main resources and opportunities of the Library of Rīga Stradiņš University.
5.Students understand the basic principles of academic writing, the making of references and the importance of academic honesty.
6.Students know plagiarism risks and how to overcome these risks.
7.Students are familiar with the basic principles of argumentation and logic (argument structure, logical fallacies, drawing reasonable conclusions).
8.Students understand the principles of interdisciplinary collaboration and the importance of teamwork in solving social problems.
9.Students understand the nature of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and their importance in the analysis of social problems.
Skills
1.After completing the course, students are able to navigate the study environment and organise their study work independently.
2.Students are able to select, critically evaluate and use different sources of information.
3.Students know how to use references correctly and avoid plagiarism.
4.Students are able to create structured academic text according to requirements.
5.Students are able to identify social problems based on the UN sustainable Development goals.
6.Students are able to analyse social problems in an interdisciplinary perspective (in the context of law, politics, business and communication).
7.Students are able to formulate a reasoned opinion in written and oral form.
8.Students know how to prepare and present a short, convincing report on the problem they choose.
Competences
1.After completing the course, students are able to integrate knowledge from different areas of social sciences by analysing current societal problems.
2.Students demonstrate academic honesty and accountability in the study process.
3.Students are able to think independently and critically when making informed decisions.
4.Students are able to apply logical and structured thinking by arguing their point of view and making sound decisions.
5.Students have developed the competence of communication in different forms (written and oral).
6.Students demonstrate the ability to work together on a team, taking responsibility for their performance and shared outcomes.
7.Students understand their chosen field of study and its importance in the wider context of society.
8.Students are able to analyse social problems in the context of the UN sustainable Development goals and reasoned their relevance.
