About Study Course

Objective

To acquire medical vocabulary in Latvian and basic elements of conversational Latvian language in order to be able to use Latvian language to find out the patient's personal data, symptoms, and anamnesis data, as well as give short recommendations.

Preliminary Knowledge

Basic knowledge of the Latvian language is required (level A1/A2 according to Common European Framework of Reference for Language Learning, Teaching and Assessment).

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.On successful completion of the course students will be able to: • name human body parts and organs; • name the most common symptoms of infections, endocrinological, gynaecological, paediatrical, nephrological diseases and traumas; • make conversation with the patient in Latvian about the most common signs of the aforementioned diseases and traumas.

Skills

1.On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to: • select and use appropriate medical vocabulary in communication with patient; • develop a case history; • give simple instructions to the patient during the examination and treatment.

Competences

1.On successful completion of the course, students will be able to practically use medical vocabulary and make conversation with a patient in Latvian.

At the end of each semester – an oral test on the topics covered during the semester: a conversation with a patient according to a given pattern. The final grade consists of the 7th-semester test results (50%) and 8th-semester exam results (50%). At the end of the course, every student must fill the course evaluation survey.
