About Study Course

Objective

To acquire knowledge about the following: - public health (concept, definition) as a sub-branch of medicine; - the goals, tasks and priorities of public health; - general hygiene. Environment and man. Environmental factors and impact thereof on human health; - Environmental quality indicators and principles of the assessment thereof.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Using the acquired knowledge and understanding, the student will be able: - to define and explain the concept and definition of public health; - to describe and explain the goals, tasks and priorities of public health; - to present knowledge of general hygiene and environmental factors and impact thereof on human health; - physical pollution of the environment (noise, EMF, vibration); - air as a component of the environment, air protection, air-related risk factors, air quality assessment principles; - water as a component of the environment, water protection, principles of quality and safety assessment, including hygiene of drinking water supply, and risk factors related to water supply.

Skills

1.The student will be able: - to observe and assess the state of public health, the physical and social environment; - to identify and analyse public health risk factors and options for the prevention thereof.

Competences

1.- to assess environmental risk factors, develop measures to prevent the impact of environmental risk factors on people’s living conditions and health.

- to prepare presentations “The Most Important Laws of the Republic of Latvia, Regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers and Other External Regulatory Documents in the Field of Epidemiological Safety” and “Types of Drinking Water Supply, Pollution Risks and Prevention Thereof”; - to study all the necessary regulatory basis for the evaluation of drinking water in the monitoring facility, including criteria for laboratory water testing; - to use literature sources in order to get acquainted with the objectives of epidemiological investigation of cases of infectious diseases.
