About Study Course

Objective

Students learn basics on frequent maxillofacial deformities and their impact on speech function and methods for treatment, develop understanding about the role of speech pathologist in patient's care.

Preliminary Knowledge

To start study course (or semester) all previous assessments according to Study plan (D1) should be successfully passed. Head and mouth anatomy and physiology, basic knowledge about speech.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Students will have basic knowledge on frequent maxillofacial deformities (occlusal and skeletal deformities in maxillofacial region; malformations of oral soft tissue; cleft lip and palate), their impact on speech function and methods for treatment. Students will learn basic knowledge about oral cavity diseases and oral infections, their prophylaxis and treatment.

Skills

1.Students will distinguish normal and pathological functions of oral anatomical structures, students will recognize presence of oral and maxillofacial pathology, students be able to evaluate velopharyngeal function in patients with different types of oro-facial cleft.

Competences

1.Student will understand the role of speech pathologist in complex treatment of patients with maxillofacial malformations, their impact on development of patients speech. They will be aware about the limitations of speech-pathologist, and will follow the principles of ethic praxis.
