About Study Course

Objective

1. To provide knowledge of the basic general pharmacology. 2. To acquire knowledge of the mechanisms of action of different groups of medicines and their application in the treatment of diseases. 3. To promote knowledge acquisition about the principles of rational pharmacotherapy. 4. To gain knowledge of the impact of drugs on disease mechanisms and pathogenesis, and how to assess the risks and benefits of treatment.

Preliminary Knowledge

Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, introduction to clinical medicine and disease symptomatology. Knowledge of the official language.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Basic knowledge of modern stages of the discovery and development process of new medicinal substances, methods used in the development of new medicinal substances, main groups of pharmacological agents and medications in them, mechanisms of action, undesirable side effects.

Skills

1.As a result of the study course, students will acquire the skills to obtain objective information about medicines, will be knowledgeable about the mechanisms of action of different groups of medicines, will be able to navigate the processes of different stages of drug development, evaluating their management and economic aspects.

Competences

1.Understanding of the modern process of discovering new medicinal substances, its costs and the current situation in Latvia and internationally. They will be familiar with different drug groups, mechanisms of activity, and will be knowledgeable about the special literature.

Learning general and special pharmacology, selecting and analysing information about medicines - presentations. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal.

During the practical classes, there are regular tests and short tests. End-of-course examination: a written exam on the basis of pharmacology and the content of the special pharmacology course.
