About Study Course

Objective

To ensure the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills on the peculiarities of psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents in order to enable diagnostics and therapy thereof within the limits of psychiatrist’s competence.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Knowledge on mental retardation and mental development delays in childhood; pervasive developmental disorders: child autism, Asperger’s syndrome, Rett syndrome. Specific disorders of psychological development (language, reading, writing, calculation). Behavioural disorders in child and adolescent practice – ADHS, oppositional-defiant behaviour, socialised (delinquent) conduct disorders. Child neuroses, reactions to severe psycho-emotional stress and adaptation disorders. Peculiarities of child and adolescent depression. Clinical peculiarities, prevalence, diagnostics, course of schizophrenia. Possibilities of child and adolescent care in Latvia.

Skills

1.Skills in using diagnostic and therapy methods used in child and adolescent psychiatry; evaluation and description of subjective and objective anamnesis, psychiatric and behavioural disorders; use of diagnostic scales; psychological and psycho-diagnostic examination in the amount required by a psychiatrist; evaluation of opinions provided by geneticist, endocrinologist, paediatric neurologist, paediatric narcologist, audio speech-therapist, and nutritionist. Basic skills in referring for the aforementioned diagnostic methods and interpretation of examination results in the amount required by a psychiatrist.

Competences

1.Competencies in the diagnostics of psychiatric and behavioural disorders, child and adolescent psychiatric care at inpatient institution and in outpatient care. Cooperation with professionals of other specialities and support personnel while planning and implementing team work principles, as well as in interpersonal relations, on the issues of ethical and legal character, with the purpose of ensuring early diagnostics, prevention, therapy and psychosocial rehabilitation of psychiatric disorders.
