About Study Course

Objective

The aim of this study course is to give knowledge about the role of microorganisms and viruses in oral hygiene and health, etiology of disease, environmental distribution and control of microorganisms.

Preliminary Knowledge

Preliminary knowledge in biology, human anatomy and physiology, and chemistry in high school level is required.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Upon successful completion of the course students will acquire the knowledge about morphology and properties of bacteria, microscopic fungi and viruses, their role in disease etiology, human microflora, and oral hygiene and health. Students will be able to understand the role of environmental microflora as a source of contamination, the role of instrument disinfection and sterilization, also the basics of defense mechanisms in human body.

Skills

1.Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to apply appropriate microbiological control methods, use disinfection and sterilization.

Competences

1.Upon successful completion of the course students will know the importance of oral microflora in dental health, also will be competent to advise patients and recommend preventive measures to maintain optimal oral hygiene and health.

Assessment

Individual work

Title
% from total grade
Grade
1.

Individual work

-
-
Within the framework of the course students work in a laboratory – preparing, staining and microscoping slides, inoculating bacterial material on cultivation media, isolating pure cultures, and also determine bacterial properties and prepare for weekly theoretical tests.

Examination

Title

Grade
1.

Examination

-
-
The students will be evaluated by their participation in practical classes, the ability to work with a microscope and perform inoculation of bacterial material, weekly theoretical tests, and the ability to objectively interpret the results obtained and critically come to conclusions. The main part of evaluation consists of two colloquiums and the final exam.
