About Study Course

Objective

To acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the etiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of pulp and apical periodontal tissue diseases.

Preliminary Knowledge

Oral anatomy, oral histology, dental embryology, pulp histology, physiology, oral microbiology, immunology, radiology, dental hard tissue pathology.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.After obtaining of the content of the study course students will have a detailed knowledge of the prevention, etiology, pathology, clinical presentation and treatment options for diseases affecting the pulp and periradicular tissue. Will be able to perform the diagnosis of endodontic pathology. Will have the knowledge of the differential diagnosis of oro-facial pain. Will understand the microbiology and immunology of pulpal and periapical disease, relation to the general health. Will understand biomaterials science and medicaments in relation to endodontics. Will have knowledge of the indications for apical surgery and complicated root canal treatment and for referral to an endodontic specialist. Will be able to evaluate the outcome and prognosis of the root canal treatment.

Skills

1.The undergraduate will be able to use and to interpret basic diagnostic tests. Will be able to use rubber dam and additional isolation methods. Will be able to use rubber dam and additional isolation methods. Will be able to provide good dental anesthesia and supplemental anesthesia methods. Undergraduate will be able to perform primary root canal treatment in satisfactory quality on non-complicated teeth and to provide first aid in the case of symptomatic endodontic pathology.

Competences

1.Students acquire competence in endodontics according to the regulations of the general dentist specialty. Competence to diagnose endodontic disease, make decisions and choose treatment methods that are in accordance with existing treatment methods in dentistry.

Test

Students should self-study the theoretical part of the study course by learning the mandatory literature, study materials, presentations and video lectures specified for each topic. Acquisition of the specified materials is a mandatory part of the study course and is necessary for successful acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

As part of the study course, it is mandatory for students to perform regular practical work in the pre-clinical learning environment. Practical training involves systematically learning the endodontic approach of different dental groups, practically developing approach inhibitions for front teeth, canines, premolars and molars, as well as learning basic principles for locating, preparing and filling root canals. The practical tasks are performed using learning patterns and phantom heads, thus developing manual skills, spatial thinking, instrument usage skills and understanding of the anatomy and morphology of the root channel system. Pre-clinical training forms the basis for future clinical work with patients.

Examination

Examination

10 points

At the end of part 1 of the study course, the student shall take a written theoretical accounting and practical accounting. The assessment consists of the written theoretical report (50%), the practical report (35%) and the accumulated assessment during the semester (15%).

Part 2 of the study course assesses clinical competences throughout the semester. Meeting clinical requirements is a mandatory prerequisite for admission to a written examination. At the end of the second semester, the student shall take a written face-to-face examination, the assessment of which shall be the final assessment of part 2 of the study course.

Course Part 1 (Preclinical Training)

Student performance is assessed continuously throughout the semester through evaluation of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional development. The final grade for Part 1 is calculated as follows: Written theoretical assessment – 50%; Practical assessment – 35%; Continuous assessment throughout the semester – 15%.

Continuous assessment includes preparedness for practical sessions, demonstration of theoretical knowledge during classes, quality of practical work, progress in skill acquisition, and the ability to justify the selection of instruments, materials, and treatment procedures.

Assessment includes evaluation of student-created access cavities according to accepted principles and quality criteria, root canal localization, instrument selection, root canal preparation and obturation techniques, and individual stages of endodontic treatment. Practical assessment evaluates bur selection, access cavity design, instrument selection, preparation technique and quality, tooth preparation for obturation, selection of obturation instruments and materials, and obturation quality. Theoretical knowledge is assessed through written examinations and topic-based assessments.

Students must obtain a passing grade in both the theoretical and practical components to successfully complete Part 1 of the course.

Course Part 2 (Clinical Training)

Clinical competencies are assessed continuously throughout the semester and include diagnostic skills, treatment planning, application of theoretical knowledge in clinical practice, quality of clinical procedures, professional conduct, documentation, and compliance with patient safety and infection control requirements.

Assessment includes diagnosis and treatment planning, isolation techniques, access cavity preparation, working length determination, root canal preparation, irrigation and intracanal medication protocols, obturation procedures, radiographic assessment, and overall quality of endodontic treatment.

Prior to performing clinical procedures, the instructor may verify the student's theoretical preparedness through oral or written questioning. If a student is unable to justify the planned procedure, treatment sequence, selection of instruments or materials, or management of potential complications, an additional theoretical assessment may be required before continuing clinical treatment.

Successful completion of all clinical requirements is mandatory for admission to the final examination. At the end of Part 2, students are required to sit a written final examination. The examination grade constitutes the final grade for Part 2 of the course.
