About Study Course

Objective

To provide comprehensive knowledge of the development of the nursing profession in a historical context, nursing theories and their relationship to modern changes in healthcare in a multicultural environment, patterns of care, basic principles of professional and medical ethics, as well as the implementation of evidence-based care while developing critical thinking.

Preliminary Knowledge

Introduction to the use of the Library, medical terminology in a foreign language, propedeytics, anatomy, contact psychology and communication skills, history of Latvia.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Explain the development of the nursing profession in a historical context and describe the main theories of Nursing, their importance and relation to changes in modern healthcare. Describe patterns of care and their application in the planning and implementation of evidence-based patient care in a multicultural environment. Understand the basic principles of medical and professional ethics, as well as the philosophical and ethical assumptions on which the professional activities of nurses are based. Describe principles of evidence-based care, basics of research methodology and terminology in healthcare.

Skills

1.able to analyse and compare different Nursing theories and approaches to care; able to apply the care process model in the analysis of theoretical situations; able to identify and assess ethical dilemmas in healthcare; able to interpret scientific evidence and its role in improving the quality of care; able to justify professional decisions based on theory and evidence.

Competences

1.demonstrate an understanding of the values, ethics and professional responsibility of the nursing profession; able to integrate theoretical knowledge into the context of professional activity; able to critically evaluate information and make reasoned decisions; develop professional identity and readiness to work in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment; respect ethical principles and evidence-based approaches to patient care.

The student shall prepare four independent papers independently during the course for an intermediate assessment, which shall be presented in a group with the aim of further exploring the topics to be learned in the course: 1. medical symbols and emblems in medicine, their meaning and use today; 2. Nursing theories; 3. on ethical matters; 4. The evidence-based approach.

In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must complete the study course assessment questionnaire on the student Portal.
