About Study Course

Objective

To acquire knowledge about the structure, functions and diseases of the dental support - periodontium, as well as their relationship with the characteristics of the bite, diseases of the teeth and body systems. To evaluate interrelationships in the diagnosis of diseases, in the selection of treatment methods and to be able to apply them in clinical practice. To acquire knowledge about calculus removal tools and the basic principles of instrumentation in pre-clinic and clinic.

Preliminary Knowledge

Students must have knowledge in oral anatomy, physiology, histology, microbiology and prevention of oral diseases.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Students define the structure of the periodontium (anatomy and histology), clinical parameters of the periodontium; understand the pathogenesis and etiology of periodontal diseases; explains the clinical and radiological examination of the periodontium; describes and recognizes the tools used in periodontal examination and the principles of their application; uses the basic principles of ergonomics in working with the patient.

Skills

1.Students taking this course: performs periodontal examination, evaluates and analyzes periodontal clinical parameters and disease pathogenesis; evaluates and explains the results of periodontal radiological examinations, creates and formulates an initial basic treatment stage plan, removes soft plaque, recognizes and removes supragingival calculus, choose and apply appropriate tools, performs sharpening of tools.

Competences

1.Students: able to independently perform a periodontal examination and document the data obtained during the examination on a card, able to remove dental plaque and supragingival calculus from the surface of the tooth crown; able to reasonably choose and use various hand and mechanical instruments; able to perform instrument sharpening.

To be able to independently conduct an ergonomic patient examination in practice and to select and use the correct instrument. Preparation for lectures and independent work with sources of literature. Prepare thorough, exhaustive information on the subject asked using scientific literature. at the end of the 1st and 2nd semesters, an exam on the substance acquired in lectures and classes. Exam is written and practical. The assessment of the final exam will comprise a 50% test result on topics learned in lectures and 50% of those learned in classes. The tests for the written part of the final exam shall consist of elective and open type questions and shall be passed if 55% of the answers have been correctly provided. Assessment will be turned into balls. In an oral-practical part, the student in the clinic is able to display and apply various tools for removing the timber, is able to apply the correct principles of ergonomics in working with the patient. Complete the course evaluation questionnaire.
