About Study Course

Objective

To ensure acquisition and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in cardiac surgery according to the requirements of the thoracic surgery speciality regulations to prepare doctors for certification in the speciality of thoracic surgery according to regulatory documents of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Able to demonstrate in-depth or extended knowledge and understanding, part of which are in line with the latest discoveries in the respective field of science or professional area and lay the foundation for creative thinking or research, including when working in-between different sectors - diagnosis of invasive cardiac pathology - possibilities of transluminal revascularisation, stent placement, embolization, IVC filter placement. Indications, contraindications, complications. - possible complications in the remote post-operative period, their diagnosis and treatment.

1.Able to independently use the theory, methods and problem solving skills in order to conduct research or artistic work, and highly qualified professional functions Able to reasonably explain and discuss complicated or systemic aspects of the respective field of science or professional area with both specialists and non-specialists Able to independently drive the improvement of one’s competences and specialisation, to take responsibility for the performance and analysis of teams of staff, to do business, innovations in the respective field or profession, to work, do research or further learning in complicated and unpredictable conditions and to transform them using new approaches, when needed • to examine a patient with coronary pathology, • to correctly select indications for invasive examination techniques and surgical treatment, • revascularisation techniques, coronary artery reconstruction, • types, manifestations, diagnosis of heart rhythm disorders; surgical treatment options, • heart valve replacements; surgical options.

At the end of the cycle, the resident’s theoretical knowledge is tested in a written test (50 questions) and orally, and the practical skills acquired are assessed on a 10-point scale.
