About Study Course

Objective

To acquire medical terminology in Latvian and to develop practical conversational skills and abilities to communicate with patients.

Preliminary Knowledge

Basic knowledge of the Latvian language is required (level A1/A2 according to Common European Framework of Reference for Language Learning, Teaching and Assessment).

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.On successful completion of the course students will be able to: • name human body parts and organs; • name the most common symptoms of cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and throat, nose and ear diseases; • read and understand simple text of medicine in Latvian; • make conversation with a patient in Latvian.

Skills

1.On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to: • select and use appropriate medical vocabulary in communication with a patient; • develop a case history; • give simple instructions to the patient during the examination and treatment.

Competences

1.On successful completion of the course, students will be able to practically use medical vocabulary and make conversation with a patient in Latvian.

Individual and pair work – mastering of the vocabulary of the corresponding topic and using of grammar, working with a dictionary, making of dialogues. Students are obliged to fill in the course evaluation questionnaire at the end of the course.

Active participation in practical classes. During course there are 2 tests. In the end of 5th semester is written test. In the end of 6th semester is oral test. They should be successfully passed. Average grade for tests (5th semester test is 40%, 6th semester test is 60%) is the final grade for the course. In case students don't want the average grade for tests as the final grade for the course acquisition, there is an exam at the end of the course, which includes topics from both semester.
