About Study Course

Objective

To provide knowledge about most common anomalies and diseases in the area of ears, throat and nose. To provide an overview of modern possibilities of treatment of ear, throat and nose diseases. To teach how to recognise a patient with diseases in the area of ears, throat and nose, to perform a simple examination and to refer to a specialist, when needed. To create an understanding of modern approaches in integrated patient care among orthodontic and otolaryngological specialists.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Knowledge about otorhinolaryngology as a speciality, its fields of operation and treatment possibilities. To know about interdisciplinary treatment approaches in diseases related to the breathing function and facial aesthetics. To know about ethiopathogenesis of hearing disorders, latest treatment methods. To know about treatment approaches to children with obstructive sleep apnoea.

Skills

1.To be able to perform basic examination of ears, throat and nose. To know how to determine the breathing function of the nose using a rhinometer.

Competences

1.Is able to recognise a patient with diseases of ears, throat and nose and to refer to a specialist by choosing the best time before orthodontic treatment, regularly during orthodontic treatment. Has an understanding of the effect of chronic diseases of ears, throat and nose on craniofacial growth and development. Has an understanding of the orthodontist’s role in integrated treatment of patients with otorhinolaryngologial diseases.

To revise normal anatomy and physiology of ears, nose and throat. To prepare a presentation according to respective topics of classes: “Impact of a respiratory obstruction on face development.” “Impact of rapid upper jaw expansion on otitis media.” As instructed by the teacher, to examine patients, to prepare reports on potential pathologies and treatment possibilities.
