About Study Course

Objective

Ensure that students acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and competence in the field of Family Law. To develop an understanding about the family law institute in Latvia and Family Law as part of the Civil Law of the Republic of Latvia and other related legislation, as well as to introduce the jurisprudence in the field of Family Law and its practical application in solving family legal issues.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.As a result of the study course acquisition students are able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of family law, family law institutes and the latest case law in the field of family law, which provides a basis for correct interpretation and application of family law, preparation of legal documents, complex family law issues, creative thinking and research in the field of family law.

Skills

1.As a result of the study course acquisition students are able to: explain and discuss in an argumentative manner both complex and systemic aspects of family law with both specialists and non-specialists; to independently use the theory, methods and problem-solving skills of family law in order to perform research activities and the functions of a highly qualified lawyer in the field of family law; independently formulate and critically analyze complex scientific and professional problems of family law, substantiate decisions and, if necessary, perform additional analysis.

Competences

1.As a result of the study course acquisition students are able to: integrate knowledge of various fields of civil law, contribute to the development of research and professional methods, show an understanding of the results of family law science and the potential impact of professional activities on society; to independently promote the development of their competencies and specialization in the field of family law; to provide legal advice on complex family law issues, applying the latest case law.

Independent work consists of study and scientific literature, analysis of legal acts and jurisprudence analysis in the field of family law. As part of the study course, two independent works must be developed and defended - an analysis of problematic issues in the distribution of joint property of spouses and an analysis of problematic issues in cases arising from custody and contact rights, including cases of illegal transfer of children across the border.

The final grade consists of the assessment of independent works (50%) and the exam assessment (50%). The assessment of independent works takes into account the completeness of the requirements, the quality of argumentation, the compliance of the style of expression with the requirements of grammar and professional legal language.
