About Study Course

Objective

To teach students to handle emergency, life-threatening situations before the doctor arrives. To inform about the structure and organisation of the civil protection in the country, as well as duties and measures to be taken in case of various disasters.

Preliminary Knowledge

Preliminary knowledge of biology and chemistry (at secondary school level).

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Knowledge of first aid in life-threatening situations, as well as calling for help. As a result of learning the study course, students will know how to perform the sequence of steps when examining a patient (casualty) in the pre-hospital stage, will gain knowledge in stopping bleeding, performing anti-shock measures. You will learn the basic principles of immobilization in cases of bone fractures and dislocations, providing assistance in cases of burns, overheating, hypothermia and acute poisoning. Knowledge of the structure, legal framework, organization and management of the civil defense system; knowledge of the tasks, rights and obligations of the state, local governments, legal and natural persons in the field of civil protection; knowledge of objects of increased danger, hazard risk assessment, obligations and rights of owners or legal owners; knowledge of municipal civil defense commissions; knowledge of planning civil protection measures; knowledge of dangerous substances, their classification and requirements for their storage and transportation; knowledge of requesting and providing international assistance; on personal protective equipment in the event of a disaster; knowledge of special legal regimes and actions in specific objects.

Skills

1.Will be able to perform emergency resuscitation measures, including the basic algorithm of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, identify clinical and biological signs of death, provide first aid in case of aspiration of a foreign body, perform breathing with a manual ventilator and use an oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airway, diagnose external bleeding and stop it, as well as demonstrate the ability to work according to the principles of teamwork, within the scope of one's competence. Knows how to identify different hazards and how to act in different emergency situations.

Competences

1.Provision of first aid, primary and secondary examination of the patient (victim) in the pre-hospital stage, analysis of the situation, applying the basic resuscitation algorithm and other first aid action guidelines. Competence in matters of civil protection.

Evaluation criteria when performing resuscitation on a manikin: (1) sequence of steps and algorithm of actions when performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation - must be known and performed accurately without any errors; (2) primary investigation of the victim (ABC) – must be known and performed accurately without any errors; (3) correctly finding the indirect heart massage point and the depth of the massage – must be known and performed accurately without any mistakes; (4) manual opening of the airways and artificial lung ventilations – one must know precisely and in at least 70% of cases one must manage to achieve the correct inspiratory volume; (5) the practical implementation of the stable side lie - must be known and executed accurately without any mistakes; (6) Implementation of Heimlich and other techniques in case of choking - must be known and performed accurately without any mistakes. Evaluation criteria in the first aid theory multiple-choice test: more than 75% correct answers. Multiple-choice test on civil defense issues.
