About Study Course

Objective

To provide students with and improve their theoretical knowledge and practical skills in general surgery in accordance with the requirements of the surgery speciality regulations in order to prepare the doctor for certification in surgeon’s speciality.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.- detailed theoretical knowledge on aetiology, pathogenesis, symptoms, diagnostics, differential diagnostics of congenital and acquired, acute and chronic surgical diseases, as well as indications for conservative and surgical treatment of surgical diseases must be mastered; - diagnostic methods, instruments used in surgery must be learnt.

Skills

1.- to deliver emergency medical assistance in acute cases to a patient with a surgical pathology; - to create a correct diagnostic scheme and treatment tactics for a patient with a surgical pathology; - to perform diagnostic and therapeutic manipulations.

Competences

1.To provide surgical assistance according to the requirements of the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers, the Ministry of Health and the Association of Surgeons. A certified specialist is competent to perform diagnostics of a surgical pathology, conservative and surgical treatment.

When the fifth year of studies ends – to pass the final examination of residency successfully: - assessment of theoretical knowledge – multiple-choice computer test; - Assessment of practical skills: 1) LapSim Global Study Basic Skills and Cholecystectomy; 2) Appendectomy Long Course - Intermediate (LapSim simulator); - presentation of a scientific research paper.
