About Study Course

Objective

To introduce pharmacy students to the concept of clinical pharmacy, basic principles of pharmacokinetics and their application in clinical practice. To promote understanding of various drug pharmacotherapy options. To analyze the guidelines and actualities of hospital and clinical pharmacy in Latvia and the world.

Preliminary Knowledge

Pharmaceutical and medical chemistry, physiology, pharmacology.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.After successful acquisition of the course the students will be able to: • describe and explain pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic mechanisms; • describe and explain drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion; • describe population needs as regards to medicines, ways of administration, patterns of use and drug effects on the patients; • identify and describe patient-specific data to improve pharmaceutical care.

Skills

1.After successful completion of the course the students will be able to assess and use pharmacokinetic parameters to choose the efficient therapy.

Competences

1.After successfully completing the study course, the student will be able to evaluate the peculiarities of the use of various drugs, will be able to use the acquired knowledge about the diverse pharmacokinetic processes and mechanisms to make competent conclusions about individual pharmacotherapy.
