About Study Course

Objective

To provide medical residents with opportunities to acquire and improve theoretical knowledge and skills in the specific health care field of cardiology in order to prepare them for successfully passing the certification examination in the specialty of a doctor of physical and rehabilitation medicine, in accordance with laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Will demonstrate the acquired knowledge: • will be able to explain the diagnostic principles specific to the field of cardiology; • will be able to name and describe various cardiac disorders; • will be able to classify and define indicators of cardiac function; • will be able to name and describe the signs of acute and chronic cardiological health conditions.

Skills

1.The medical resident will be able to: • assess patients’ cardiac function using appropriate methods; • use different concepts and terms about patients’ cardiac disorders; • interpret the cardiac diagnosis of patients.

Competences

1.The medical resident will use the acquired knowledge and skills: • to interpret the data obtained in the assessment of cardiac function; • to evaluate and analyse the cardiac function corresponding to the age and state of health; • to justify the necessity of starting medication therapy or surgical treatment for cardiac patients.

The daily work of a resident doctor with cardiac patients, in an inpatient setting under the supervision of a specialist physician entitled to teach. Acquisition of theoretical knowledge and improvement of skills, according to the content of the study course. Studies in depth the aetiology, prevalence and treatment of cardiac diseases that can lead to permanent health impairments that limit patient functioning.

100% attendance of theoretical seminars. Regular work with patients at the place of implementation of the study course under the guidance of a doctor entitled to teach. Presentation of a patient or clinical case at the end of the study course. Answering the questions prepared by the study course leader and teaching staff or passing tests in accordance with the Academic Regulations.
