About Study Course

Objective

To acquaint students with the trends of crime as a social phenomenon, its situation, factors influencing it, the personality of the offender, the mechanism of criminal offenses and the system of prevention thereof; special attention will be paid to methods and techniques of studying crime, promoting the acquisition of practical knowledge and skills, exploring criminogenic and anti-social processes and phenomena in Latvia and abroad, as well as developing and implementing recommendations for the prevention and combating of crime.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Students are able to demonstrate the basic and specialised knowledge characteristic to criminology science and a critical understanding of this knowledge. Students are able to demonstrate understanding of the most important concepts and regularities in criminology science.

Skills

1.The student is able to use theoretical foundations and skills acquired in order to formulate and analytically describe information, problems and solutions in criminology, to explain these and to discuss them in a reasoned way. The student is able to demonstrate a scientific approach to problem solving. The student is able to structure their learning independently.

Competences

1.Students are able to obtain, select and analyse information and use it independently. Students are able to make decisions and solve criminological problems.

The total assessment of the study course consists of the following: homework – 10%, independent work – 10%, presentation of independent work – 30% and exam assessment – 50%. When the grade must be decided on, the student’s performance during the semester is taken into account.
