About Study Course

Objective

To provide the medical residents of the specialty in dermatovenereology with training and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in accordance with the requirements of the Regulations for the specialty of dermatovenereology to prepare the physicians for certification in the specialty of dermatovenereology according to the regulatory documents of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Gains knowledge about skin and sexually transmitted diseases, their course and peculiarities in different age groups. Learns diagnostics, differential diagnosis and care of skin and sexually transmitted diseases. Gains knowledge of contemporary medical examination and treatment methods in dermatology and venereology.

Skills

1.As a result of successful acquisition of study courses, will be able to use the technologies used in medicine, independently perform examination and treatment of the patient. It will be possible to perform skin and skin derivative, mucosal inspection and palpation, skin examination, skin, skin derivative and mucosal biopsy, vaginal and rectal inspection, palpation, as well as skin, skin derivative, mucosal material removal for microscopic and microbiological examination. Will be able to perform urethral instillation, urethral compression, application of local remedies and therapeutic baths, diathermocoagulation of skin and mucosal benign formations, cryotherapy and curettage of skin and mucosal benign formations. Will understand and be able to use the following treatment methods in practice - nail milling and ablation, incision of purulent skin lesions, application of collagen into the skin, application of medicinal products into the skin, mucous membranes, rash, UVB, UVA, PUVA methods, epilation, skin and mucosal laser therapy, skin dermoscopy, as well as skin ultrasonography and photodynamic therapy. Will understand ethical issues in dermatology and venereology.

Competences

1.After obtaining the certificate, to be competent to work as a dermatologist and venereologist, to use the knowledge gained in the study process in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of skin and sexually transmitted diseases. Recognizes and differentiates skin and sexually transmitted diseases, performs examinations and treatments using recognized medical technologies. Recommends consultations of other specialists, prescribes medications, respects the patient's wishes and legislation.

Prepares the presentation on the topics mentioned in the course description, researches the topic in depth within the framework of his/her research work, gets acquainted with the required literature. During the study period medical resident has to acquire theoretical knowledge of the epidemiology, aetiology, pathogenesis, development, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, clinic and treatment of the skin and sexually transmitted diseases.
