About Study Course

Objective

According to the needs of the specialty to be studied, to promote students' ability to orient themselves in the pharmacotherapy of the most important groups of medicines and the most common chronic diseases and acute conditions. To provide knowledge about the most characteristic side effects and contraindications, taking into account the choice of the method of administration. 

Preliminary Knowledge

Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and histology, pathology.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Students will be able to describe the effect of drugs on organ system functions, will be able to define the basic indications, most common side effects and contraindications.

2.Students will gain an understanding of the basic principles of drug action, their effectiveness and risk development conditions.

Skills

1.Be able to classify medicines according to their use in the treatment of chronic diagnoses, acute illnesses or emergency conditions.

2.Be able to describe the purpose and risks of the use of indicated medicines.

3.Be able to differentiate the risks associated with the use and administration of medicines according to their severity.

4.Be able to calculate the dose to be administered according to the prescription.

Competences

1.Will be able to analyse the medicines indicated in the anamnesis and orders according to the expected clinical effect, will be able to assess their therapeutic effectiveness and the development of side effects in the work environment.

2.Be able to assess the appropriateness of the prescribed dosage and rate of administration of high-risk medications.

3.Be able to participate in the reduction of risks of medication errors, administration and inappropriate prescription.

4.Be able to educate patients about the correct use of medicines, their indications and adverse effects.

5.Be able to explain the meaning and therapeutic effectiveness of medicines in a vocabulary understandable to the patient.

Case studies

Test

Analysis of the prescriptions received and fulfilled during the clinical practice according to the requirements of the report protocol (placed in E-studies). The format of the work (electronic or paper) will be specified during the semester by mutual agreement between the lecturer and the students. The protocol is submitted within the specified deadline before the individual interviews. Submission of the protocol is mandatory. The independent work is assessed with a test.

30-question examination consisting of multiple-choice questions, clinical case studies and calculation tasks in varying proportions.

30-question examination consisting of multiple-choice questions, clinical case studies and calculation tasks in varying proportions.

Individual interviews

At the end of the study course, on the scheduled dates, each student must have an individual interview with the lecturer, during which feedback is given on the course and an analysis of the independent work is carried out. The interview is a mandatory event, without which the student cannot obtain a positive final assessment in the course.

Exam

50.00% from total grade
10 points

The accumulated exam assessment is awarded in the study course regardless of the value obtained, but the condition of individual discussions with the course lecturer is mandatory. The final assessment is calculated as the average grade from both mid-semester examinations taken during the semester.
