About Study Course

Objective

Provide students with basic knowledge of the structure, organisation and functioning of civil protection in Latvia. Familiarise students with the basic principles for working in emergency situations, their methodology, (duties, tasks, rights for different CA structures) as well as the methodology for dealing with emergencies. To familiarise students with the Latvian Civil Protection Law, Civil Protection and disaster Management Law, Fire Protection and Fire-fighting Law, Civil Protection Plan, to enable students to acquire basic knowledge of ecology – in the aspect of the biological environment and social system. To introduce students to natural resources in Latvia and the world, waste collection, sorting and recycling problems and solutions in Latvia and the world.

Preliminary Knowledge

Compulsory study courses have been acquired in the study progam of the professional bachelor of higher education “sports science”.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.As a result of the study course acquisition, students are able to discuss the topics included in the content of the study course.

Skills

1.As a result of the completion of the study course, students are able to apply the acquired knowledge in the immediate vicinity of the disaster and in situations where one of the environmental hazards is possible. There is general knowledge of civilian disaster management and cooperation between the institutions involved.

Competences

1.Students understand the institutional regulation and functioning of the civil and environmental protection system at national and international level. Understands environmental and safety factors, assesses conditions and acts in emergencies.

Studies specialised literature in independent work, produces presentations on all Seminar topics, sends a PP presentation to the seminar class. Seminar topics: 1. Risk Matrix (collapse of buildings and structures, accidents in heating, water, sewage or sewerage systems, floods, fire buildings, CSNs, railway disasters, air strikes (take-off/landing of aeroplanes, helicopters, gliders, drones 2. Calculate fire safety measures in your household. Fire safety regulations which are partially absent. Find out WHERE your household waste and sewage go; how much and who do you pay for management? 3. Transport accidents, chemical leaks. Their dangers. Modelling of various situations regarding transport and chemical accidents in the municipality, in the country, in Europe. 4. In the vicinity of the place of residence of the special protected area, including special trees, plants, fauna, etc., indicate sources! Find out the invasive species (flora/fauna) near where they live. 5. At least 2 degraded areas and facilities in or near the municipality 6. Create an eco-SVID analysis for your neighborhood. Find and find environmental organisations active in Latvia, the European Union and the world!

Participation in lectures and seminars; Preparation of a PP presentation on each topic of the seminar; Defending one PP presentation in a seminar; The final result is assessed with a grade in the 10-point system, taking into account the results achieved in the study course.
