About Study Course

Objective

Develop the ability of students to analyse the psychological competences and leadership approaches of coaches, assess their impact on athlete development and team functioning, and apply communication, emotional intelligence and collaborative skills in professional activities in the sports environment.

Preliminary Knowledge

In-depth knowledge of general, developmental and social psychology, in particular in motivation, emotion regulation, personality, communication and group process theories.

Ability to analyse psychological factors in professional situations, interpret their correlations and reasonably base conclusions on theory.

Ability to integrate knowledge of different sub-sectors of psychology, critically evaluate their suitability and reflect on their application in professional activities.

Students create a reflective aggregation during the semester that includes:

  1. 2 reflection on real or hypothetical ethical dilemmas (e.g. border violations, sports violence situations);
  2. “professional development plan”: 3 main objectives for the improvement of their psychological competence;
  3. a brief reflection section on working with a psychologist or other specialists.

Self-reflection is presented as a presentation.

Test

Students operate in groups (3-4 people) and prepare a simulated sports situation such as:

  • a drop in the athlete’s motivation;
  • conflict between coach and team;
  • errors in emotional response during training.

Each student occupies a certain role (coach, athlete, colleague, psychologist).

The situation is being staged and followed by a reflective discussion of the emotion management, communication and leadership strategies used.

Groups (3-5 people) shall develop a project “psychological preparedness plan for the work of the coach and team”, where:

  1. defines a specific problem or goal (e.g. “restoring team motivation after loss series”);
  2. influencing factors (stress, relationships, leadership style, etc.) have been analysed;
  3. psychological and collaborative strategies have been developed;
  4. includes the coach’s self-regulation and wellbeing section.

Result: written plan (5-7 pp) + 10 min presentation.
