About Study Course

Objective

To provide theoretical knowledge and acquisition of practical skills in digestive endoscopy according to the gastrointestinal endoscopy specialty Terms of Reference enabling the physician to prepare for the additional certification in the gastrointestinal endoscopy specialty, following the Latvian Association of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy requirements set for examination numbers, in addition to certification in the basic specialty.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Regarding the gastrointestinal endoscopy department set up, the possibilities of standard endoscopic equipments (endoscopes, instruments and accessories), organization of the examinations (including teamwork with endoscopy nurses), indications, contra-indications and limitations, patient selection, preparation, endoscopic terminology, diagnostic criteria, definitions, complications and their prevention, endoscopic findings documentation, options of endoscopic documentation and filling requirements, endoscopic database design principles, cooperation with radiologists and surgeons.

Skills

1.Able to perform routine esophagogastroduodenoscopy under supervision, standard colonoscopy under supervision, and proctosigmoscopy - with complete documentation of endoscopy.

Competences

1.to be able to create, assemble and provide small endoscopy unit work; the ability to collect, analyse endoscopy section work indicators, to choose their development paths, to predict possible risks.

To get acquainted with the nature of gastrointestinal endoscopy, possibilities and use of the endoscopic simulators and practical endoscopy in order to learn basic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy (including terminal ileum intubation) examination skills; to acquire endoscopic scene interpretation and further endoscopic investigative assistance level; to get acquainted with the possibilities of therapeutic endoscopy, learn and be able to perform their own standard therapeutic endoscopic manipulations, including emergency situations. Prepare 5-12 slides for each seminar with endoscopic findings and theoretical part, eg short segment Barrett's esophagus. Record 3 upper endoscopy training videos during the training course. Prepare a short presentation / report on the latest in endoscopic diagnostics.

1. resident's practical skills and theoretical knowledge according to each rotation discipline; 2. in separate stages of education, i.e. 2 times a year (1 – December-January and 2 – before the end of the study year with: a) self-assessment of the resident; b) compliance of theoretical and practical education with the requirements of the study program; c) analysis of the assessment of the resident by practice supervisors and giving feedback to the student at the end. In the 3rd residency final exam: a) test of theoretical knowledge: 1) 100 tests with one correct answer and a criterion of 70% correct answers; 2) the answer to the exam ticket – a problem question, where the theoretical basis, its modernity, completeness, a summary of literature and experience are evaluated in the answer; b) in the presence of the commission, the resident defends a prepared scientific, clinical or applied research, which is submitted in writing to the commission in advance; the commission listens to the reviewer's report and evaluates the resident's answers; c) submit to the examination committee a summary of the work done during the studies, including at least one presentation at a professional meeting, 1 publication at least at the national level, as well as a report on the optional work. The final exam of the residency is evaluated with a grade, information about the exam is recorded in the protocol, which is signed by the chairman of the commission and all members of the commission.
