About Study Course

Objective

To provide students with the opportunity to get acquainted with the regulatory enactments, their functioning, the main state requirements in the field of environmental protection and public health protection, to learn about the Latvian system of regulatory enactments in the field of environmental protection and public health protection, as well as about the system of public administration in Latvia. To inform students about the main requirements of the European Union and the legal liability applicable in Latvia in cases of breach of regulatory enactments. To promote skills in applying regulatory enactments to deal with specific situations related to environmental protection and environmental health. The study course deals with the regulation of environmental quality, the rational use of natural resources, and special environmental protection.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Will list the regulatory enactments that regulate environmental protection, name the main requirements applicable to public health protection in Latvia; identify the most important terminology used in environmental protection regulatory enactments, name the main regulatory enactments regulating environmental protection and public health in Latvia, describe the operation of European Union legislation in Latvia, name the types of legal liability for violations of law; identify environmental protection and public health institutions, name their functions and activities.

Skills

1.Will identify the relevant regulatory enactments for dealing with a specific legal problem related to environmental protection and environmental health; solve cases.

Competences

1.Will discuss the role of regulatory enactments in the field of environmental protection and public health, make judgements on the application of these regulatory enactments; discuss the most important instruments in the field of environmental protection and public health applied in Latvia, analyse the functioning of these instruments and the measures taken in Latvia in the field of environmental protection and public health.

Study of educational literature and legal documents; solving specific cases: 1. Research, presentation and discussion of a topical environmental health protection issue. 2. Situation analysis (solving the given case), assessing the administrative and legal framework of the issue, drafting of the procedural document. 3. Situation analysis (solving the given case) of a violation of environmental health legislation, providing an assessment of the factual circumstances and proposing a solution to the situation.
