About Study Course

Objective

To develop students’ communication skills for use in academic and professional settings and to facilitate the acquisition of professional terminology for productive use.

Preliminary Knowledge

Knowledge of the English language at secondary school level.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to: • recognize professional terminology in different types of texts; • recall professional terminology related to the field of dentistry; • describe different phenomena in the field of dentistry using professional terminology in English.

Skills

1.Upon successful completion of the course the students will be able to: select and use appropriate terminology in English for oral communication (presentations, discussions) and written communication (doctor's records, letters of referral, medical article annotations) in the the field of dentistry; use appropriate language devices to communicate their ideas both in written and spoken language; summarise the information from any kind of source in written and spoken language using relevant terminology in English; retell the general idea and specific information in different kinds of texts from varied types of sources.

1.On successful completion of the course students will be able to practically apply the acquired terminology in varied interaction settings.

Individual and pair work: delivering a presentation based the course topics; work with monolingual dictionaries (definitions/explanations of the terms); own research presentation - select a topic related to dentistry, design a questionnaire, conduct mini research, present and interpret the data; scientific paper presentation - select recent research in dentistry and present the data; dentist-patient interview simulation. Students are obliged to fill in the course evaluation questionnaire at the end of the course.

1st semester. Active class participation, written homework of appropriate quality, submitted in due time, the quality of oral answers - 20%. Presentations based on the topics covered throughout the semester - 40%. Test to check terminology acquisition and its practical application - 40%. 2nd semester. Active class participation; written homework of appropriate quality, submitted in due time, the quality of oral answers - 10%. Two presentations (own research and recent research) - 40%. Dentist-patient interview simulation - 20%. At the end of the course a written examination to check knowledge and practical application of terminology, general comprehension and understanding of specific information, and the use of language - 30%.
