Objective

Knowledge
1.On successful completion of the course, students will: • know the lexical minimum of conversational themes; • know the simplest language rules; • know the principles of question formation, including question words; • be able to name the human body parts, bones and internal organs; • know the most common symptoms of diseases and disorders covered during the course.
Skills
1.On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to: • comprehend simple necessary information; • give information about oneself, family, studies, daily routine orally and in writing; • ask questions and to answer them; • use medical terminology in communication with a patient, to take patient`s history (main data); • give simple instructions to the patient during the examination.
Competences
1.On successful completion of the course, students will be able to use Latvian at conversational level in daily communication and to use the acquired medical terminology in studies (to communicate with patients) (at A1 level).

Individual and pair work – written task completion, online self-assessment tests, making up of dialogues, presentation about themselves, work with internet sources, systematization of questions for taking patient`s history.
Students are requested to fill the course evaluation questionnaire at the end of the course.

Active participation in practical classes. incl. remotely.
• Written home assignments or independent work submitted in due time.
• At the end of the 1st semester: final test (oral part – answering to 10 questions asked by the course instructor, written part – multiple choice-test (40 questions, 3 options) and vocabulary task (20 lexical units).
• During the 2nd semester successfully written 1 colloquium (15%), 1 vocabulary task on human body (5%), 2 self-assessment tests (15%), presentation about themselves (15%). The evaluation of the 2nd semester tests make up 50% of the final evaluation of the course.
• At the end of the course (the 3rd semester) – final exam consisting of a written and an oral part.
To pass the written part in each task 55% of answers must be correct.
The written part makes 30% of the final evaluation.
The oral part includes doctor – patient dialogues (topics to choose: cardiovascular diseases, diseases of respiratory system, digestive disorders). Each student has to present 2 dialogues – performing as a doctor and as a patient.
The dialogues make up 20% of the final evaluation. The dialogues are evaluated in accordance with the evaluation criteria provided in e-studies.
