About Study Course

Objective

To ensure acquisition and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in thoracic surgery in order to prepare a physician for certification in a thoracic surgeon’s specialty in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Ability to demonstrate thorough knowledge in thoracic surgery, as well as the knowledge of: - pulmonary, pleural, bronchial system, esophagus and chest wall anatomy, pathophysiology, - diagnostic methods, set of instruments used in thoracic surgery - surgical tactics in acute cases, - emergency assistance upon necessity, indications for surgical treatment - post-operative period management peculiarities.

Skills

1.Ability to use theory, as well as methods and problem solving skills independently in order to individually perform a highly qualified thoracic surgeon’s functions: To assess a patient’s general condition correctly. To examine a patient adequately. To perform pleural space puncture. To perform pleural cavity drainage.

Competences

1.Ability to explain and discuss complicated or systemic thoracic surgery aspects. Ability to independently advance improvement of one’s competence and specialisation. Ability to individually formulate and critically analyse complicated scientific and professional problems, substantiate decisions, as well as make additional analysis upon necessity. Ability to integrate knowledge of different fields, contribute to the formation of new knowledge, development of research or professional activity methods, demonstrate understanding and ethical responsibility for the potential impact of thoracic surgery.

To obtain a successful assessment, the medical resident has to be able to: • ensure emergency surgical treatment in acute cases for a patient with chest pathology, • develop a correct diagnostics scheme and treatment tactics for a patient with chest pathology, • study potential postoperative complications, their prevention and treatment, use practical skills in performance of diagnostic and medical manipulations.
