About Study Course

Objective

To provide medical residents with opportunities to acquire and improve theoretical knowledge and practical skills in order to prepare them to successfully pass the certification examination in the specialty of a doctor of physical and rehabilitation medicine, in accordance with laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Theoretical knowledge of the principles of cardiological and internal medicine, as well as paediatric neurological rehabilitation, aetiology of diseases, prevalence, clinical manifestations, rehabilitation interventions, indications and contraindications thereof. The medical resident will be able to name, define, classify and describe the most common cardiological and internal medicine, paediatric neurological diseases that result in permanent and disabling health impairments in patients.

Skills

1.The medical resident will be able: to assess cardiological and internal medicine rehabilitation and paediatric neurological rehabilitation patients from the perspective of a physical and rehabilitation medicine physician; to analyse and interpret assessment results; to predict late outcomes; to develop an individual rehabilitation plan and evaluate outcomes achieved, using objective assessment tools; to identify risk factors for complications and develop a complication prevention plan; to assess the duration, content of the patient’s rehabilitation, outcomes achieved, and the need for dynamic monitoring; to use the International Classification of Functioning.

Competences

1.The medical resident will be able: to use the acquired knowledge planning the necessary rehabilitation and dynamic monitoring in the future; to develop a comprehensive rehabilitation plan starting from the acute stage of treatment; to predict late treatment and rehabilitation outcomes; to lead the multiprofessional rehabilitation team; to develop a plan of preventive measures.

Daily work of a resident doctor with cardiological and internal rehabilitation and paediatric neurological rehabilitation patients in an inpatient setting under the supervision of a certified physician specialising in physical and rehabilitation medicine. Acquisition of theoretical knowledge and improvement of skills, according to the content of the study course. Studies in depth the aetiology, prevalence, clinical manifestations, treatment of and rehabilitation after cardiological diseases that can lead to permanent health impairments that limit patient functioning and disability.

100% attendance of theoretical seminars. Regular work with patients at the place of implementation of the study course under the guidance of a certified physician specialising in physical and rehabilitation medicine. Presentation of a patient or clinical case at the end of the study course. Answering the questions prepared by the study course leader and teaching staff or passing tests in accordance with the Academic Regulations.
